POISON Singer Comments On Upcoming TONY AWARDS Performance
June 6, 2009'80s glam rockers POISON will perform at the 63rd annual Tony Awards on Sunday, June 7 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The event will air live on CBS beginning at 8 p.m. EST.
POISON will sing with the cast of "Rock of Ages", the jukebox musical about an aspiring rock group on the Sunset Strip. The dark-horse show, which originated at Hollywood's King King club before moving to Las Vegas and then Broadway, received five nominations, including one for best musical.
Singer Bret Michaels, who continues to have one of the highest-rated shows on VH1 three years running with his "Rock of Love" series and who is currently on tour with his solo band the BMB, will fly into New York City specifically for his reunion with POISON at the awards show.
Michaels states: "I'm excited to jam with POISON again and it is an absolute honor to perform at the Tony Awards alongside other music legends like ELTON JOHN, DOLLY PARTON, and the cast of 'Rock Of Ages'."
The appearance will be the first time that Michaels has appeared with POISON on the red carpet since the infamous fight between him and C.C. DeVille took place at MTV Music Awards.
"There is no doubt C.C. and I have had a few altercations over the years," Michaels admits. "I typically avoid red carpet events because they aren't really my thing and usually end in disaster for me. However, I am hoping there will not be a repeat performance of the MTV incident and the four of us can get down the red carpet peacefully."
Michaels' autobiography, "Roses & Thorns: The Reality of My Rock & Roll Fantasy", is scheduled to be released this summer. According to a rep for Michaels, the book, which is being published by Simon & Schuster, will take readers through the rocker's humble upbringing in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (where he struggled with childhood diabetes),his wild ride with POISON, the car crashes that nearly took his life, and the 10-year journey to reinvent himself on VH1's top-rated show "Rock of Love".
"It will give people the untold story," Michaels recently told Billboard.com. "It gives you the sex, the drugs, the rock 'n' roll, but it also gives you the diabetes. It gives you every aspect of my life and what I'm going through. I think it's pretty frank. It's honest. It's at times self-deprecating. It's about what happens when you try to live out your dream and the reality of it all sets in and it's the hardest and the strangest thing you will ever do. I think when you read it you'll really get the understanding of what it's all about."
Michaels will continue to tour with his solo band until the beginning of the DEF LEPPARD / POISON / CHEAP TRICK tour, which is scheduled to start on June 23 in Camden, New Jersey.
